Uniting Community Through Creativity
The Dalhousie Medical Students who put on the Art Connects showcase can proudly pat themselves on the back for a job well done. They worked with us to put up an art exhibit in the Tupper Link featuring original artwork created by the young people who live in the HomeBridge Community. The exhibit was on display for three days raising awareness and funds for the Expressions Program of the Arts.
The inspiration for this event came when one of the medical students spent time in the HomeBridge Community working with Pediatrician Dr. Tania Wong at her onsite clinic. After working with the young people, Neha Khanna wanted to do more to support them so she gathered a group of her classmates and started planning. They coordinated the art show, recruited financial supporters and also had Antoinette's Cheesecakes and coffee to entice donors on the opening day. Their efforts raised over $2,000 to support Art Therapy through the Expressions Program of the Arts and educated a whole new audience on the youth-in-care and the work being done in the HomeBridge Community. On top of that they also had an incredibly positive impact on the self-confidence of two of the young arts. Our Recreation Therapist brought the two young men over to see the display on opening day and they could not believe their photographs and paintings were hung in a medical building for all to see. They pointed out their pieces to everyone who walked by and couldn’t wait to get back to the HomeBridge Community to tell everyone about the art show.
Thank you to the Dalhousie Medical Students, Antoinette’s Cheesecakes and everyone who supported this event. The theme of Art Connects was “Uniting Community Through Creativity” and I think there is no question that it accomplished just that.
